included in your kit
Your hire includes the Perfect mama+ unit with pre-set maternity programmes, a boost button for extra relief during each contraction, and a built-in contraction timer. It comes with a lanyard so the unit hangs at your chest — no holding it, no putting it down, and the boost button always within reach whether you're leaning, swaying or on all fours. There's a belt clip too, if you'd rather wear it at your waist.
You also get 4 brand-new electrode pads, easy instructions and a Quick Start Guide, The Nest sample pack, and The Birth Partner's Guide — plus a return postage label for sending the unit back. The unit runs on rechargeable batteries, which come back with it as part of our low-waste approach. The pads, The Nest and the guide are yours to keep.
The Nest — your sample pack
Tucked away in your package: a little gathering of comforts for the weeks either side of birth. Either a sample of our Organic Body and Belly Oil, a sample of our Breast Pads, or one of our wooden labour combs, and a handful of treats from small brands we love. Yours to keep, whatever happens with the hire.
The Birth Partner's Guide — free with every hire
Most birth resources are written for the labouring woman. This one is for the person standing next to her. A short, practical guide — where the pads go and when to move them, when to press boost and who does it, counter-pressure and the hip squeeze, how to use a comb, and what to say when nothing seems to help. A printed card comes in your box, and the digital copy lands in your inbox.
Choose your start date at checkout and the machine is yours for a 4 or 5-week hire — timed to comfortably cover your due date, with room to practise beforehand and use it for early postpartum recovery. Adding The Surge to your birth pool hire? It ships free in the same kit. See our Hire Terms and Conditions for full details.
TENS hire NZ — common questions
How much does TENS hire cost?
The Surge is $59.90 for a 4 or 5-week hire, plus a refundable $50 bond that's returned once the unit comes back. Delivery is $8 (urban) or $13 (rural) and includes your return label — and it's free when bundled with a Birth Pool Hire, or on orders over $150.
What's included in the hire?
The TensCare Perfect mama+ unit, 2 lead wires, a lanyard for wearing it around your neck, a belt clip and pouch, plus 4 brand-new electrode pads, rechargeable batteries, instructions and a Quick Start Guide, The Nest sample pack, The Birth Partner's Guide, and a return postage label. The pads, The Nest and the guide are yours to keep; the unit, leads, lanyard, clip, pouch and rechargeable batteries come back to us.
Do I have to hold it the whole time?
No — the lanyard lets you wear the unit around your neck so it sits at your chest, hands free. You can move, lean, sway or get on all fours and it stays with you, with the boost button right there when a contraction builds. There's also a belt clip if you'd prefer it at your waist.
Can I add it to my birth pool hire?
Yes — add The Surge to your birth pool hire and it ships free in the same kit, with no extra delivery charge. One delivery, one box, one return. A lovely way to have both ready for your birth.
How does a labour TENS machine work?
Gentle electrical pulses travel through pads placed on your back. TENS is widely used in labour as a drug-free comfort measure, and many women find it helps them stay mobile and focused through contractions. You control the intensity, and the boost button gives extra support during each surge. It can be used alongside other forms of pain relief — your midwife can advise on what's right for you.
When should I start using it?
TENS is designed for use in labour from around 37 weeks, or as advised by your midwife. It works best when you start in early labour, before surges become intense — so it's worth having it set up and ready to go.
Can I use it in the birth pool?
No — a TENS machine must be removed before you get into water. Many women use TENS through early and active labour at home, then take the pads off and step into the pool when they're ready. Your midwife will help you judge the timing.
Is it hygienic?
Yes — every hire comes with brand-new electrode pads (the only part that touches your skin), and the unit and accessories are cleaned and sanitised between each hire.
How do delivery and returns work?
Delivery is tracked courier — $8 urban or $13 rural, which includes your return label (free when bundled with a Birth Pool Hire, or on orders over $150). When your hire ends, pack the unit and accessories into the return satchel and drop it off or book a pickup. Keep the pads, The Nest and the guide; the unit, leads, lanyard, clip, pouch and rechargeable batteries come back to us. Your bond is refunded once it's back safe and working.
What if I go past my due date?
No stress — your hire is timed to cover a late arrival. If you need it a little longer, just let us know. Where availability allows, extra hire is $15 per full week, deducted from your bond.
