Pregnant woman applying Labour and Love organic belly oil to her bump — using belly oil in pregnancy

Belly Oil in Pregnancy: When & How to Use It (NZ Guide)

You can start using belly oil as early as the first trimester, and most Kiwi mums begin when their skin first feels dry or tight. There's no clinical reason to wait, and starting early means the daily ritual is already in place when your skin stretches fastest. Here's when to start, how much to use, and what to look for in a good pregnancy belly oil.

When to start belly oil in pregnancy

The best time to start is whenever your skin starts to feel dry or tight, and any time from the first trimester is fine. Here's how it usually looks:

  • First trimester (weeks 1–13): you can start now if the oil is fragrance-free and made for pregnancy. Your skin may not have changed yet, so many mums use this time to build the habit.
  • Second trimester (weeks 14–27): the most common time to begin. Around weeks 14 to 18 the bump becomes more visible and the skin starts stretching in earnest.
  • Third trimester (weeks 28–40): itchy, tight skin is most common now. Daily oiling, once or twice a day, makes the stretch far more comfortable.
  • After birth: keep going. Your skin continues to change for weeks, and the same oil works for postpartum skin.

If you have eczema or very sensitive skin, have a quick chat with your LMC or pharmacist before introducing anything new.

How much belly oil to use and how to apply it

Use a small amount, a few drops at a time, and add more only if your skin still feels dry. A light layer absorbs better than a heavy one.

  1. Apply after your shower or bath, while your skin is still slightly damp.
  2. Warm a few drops between your palms.
  3. Massage into your belly, hips, breasts and thighs with slow, circular strokes. Two to three minutes is plenty.
  4. Repeat once or twice a day. Morning and night works well, but the best time is whichever one you'll actually keep up.

A fast-absorbing oil means you can dress straight afterwards without feeling greasy.

What belly oil does, and what it doesn't

Belly oil keeps stretching skin soft and comfortable, eases dryness, tightness and itch, and gives you a few quiet minutes with your bump each day. What it can't do is guarantee you won't get stretch marks, because those come down mostly to genetics. We cover the evidence in our honest guide on whether belly oil prevents stretch marks.

A little itch is normal as skin stretches. But intense itching, especially on your palms or the soles of your feet, or itching that keeps you up at night, is worth mentioning to your midwife.

What to look for in a pregnancy belly oil

A short, readable ingredient list is the best sign of a gentle oil. Look for:

  • Organic plant oils as the base, such as sweet almond, jojoba or rosehip.
  • No synthetic fragrance. Many pregnant noses are very sensitive, and fragrance can trigger nausea or skin reactions.
  • No essential oils that aren't recommended in early pregnancy. If you're unsure, choose fragrance-free.
  • Fast-absorbing and lightweight, so it nourishes without the greasy residue.
  • Safe from the first trimester, so check it's formulated for pregnancy.

Our organic belly oil for pregnancy ticks every one of these: a lightweight, fragrance-free organic blend made in New Zealand, safe from the first trimester and just as good for postpartum skin. One bottle lasts around three months with daily use.
